Tuku launches 57th album in his 57th year |

HARARE - Zimbabwean music superstar Oliver Mtukudzi officially launches his 57th album Dairai in Harare on June 26. Tuku will launch the album at the Harare International Conference Centre with a gig featuring Sulumani Chimbetu and his son, Sam Mtukudzi. It will be one of the very few shows that Tuku has staged in Zimbabwe this year. Oliver Mtukudzi was born in Highfield, Harare in 1952, making him 57. “My first attempt to sing was my birth cry,” says Mtukudzi.

KEXP, June 9, 2009 - Thomas Mapfumo is a cultural and political hero in his native Zimbabwe. He created his chimurenga music during the struggle for liberation from the white minority government in the 1970s; in fact, the music's name comes from the Shona word for struggle. Mapfumo's subtle yet clear political and social messages led to his arrest by the Ian Smith government, and his music remains rooted in Shona tradition, particularly mbira (thumb piano) music that was suppressed in part out of fear of its religious power. |
