Tuku, Sam raise the roof at SA festival
Monday, 14 July 2008
OLIVER Mtukudzi and his son, Sam, wowed the capacity crowds at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, last Friday and Saturday The two concerts marked Tuku and Sam’s debut at this presitigious 32-year old festival that takes places in the small town of Grahamstown where Rhodes University is located Sam opened the concert with two solo numbers from his debut album, Rume Rimwe, and had the crowd chanting his name.

The multi-talented Sam played both the saxophone and the guitar and also showed that he can do some fancy moves of his own. But the show was really about his father whom he introduced, tongue-in-cheek as “my brother, my friend and, because she is not here, my mum”. When the man came on stage you could feel the electricity in the air and, the showman that he is, Tuku did not disappoint.

The 90-minute show was a roller-coaster of new and old songs but the crowd was also waiting for their favourite Todii? For a market that is difficult for African musicians to penetrate, Tuku has conquered South Africa pretty much the way he has done the whole world. Todii? is somekind of a national anthem and it was exciting to hear the predominantly Xhosa-speaking crowd singing along to the Shona parts of Tuku’s music.

In between the concerts Tuku managed to give interviews to the media. He spoke of how Sam represented the future of Tuku Music and you could see how on stage they complemented each other but also how Sam was beginning to play a more prominent role in Tuku music and putting forward his own identity.

Tuku also spoke of his vision for Pakare Paya Arts Centre in Norton and how he would like to grow the centre so young artists can be groomed and bloom.

At a time when Zimbabwe is torn by violence and intolerance, it was great being with a musical leader who is so talented and humble and represents the best Zimbabwe can offer.

Tuku’s show was sponsored by Standard Bank.
